“Lemonade” scones

I have never made lemonade scones before, but as it turns out, you can replace the lemonade with cider and have no adverse effects.

So these aren’t really lemonade scones, but cider scones.

Occasionally on weekends I will make scones for Man Piece and I as an afternoon snack. Usually it is because we woke up a bit later than normal, had breakfast and skipped lunch. But inevitably by mid-afternoon we are a bit peckish and don’t want a full-on meal. Scones usually do the trick. We eat a couple of them and then have a slightly later dinner.

The other week I had a bit of cream leftover in the fridge and I was trying to find something to use it up. I had the idea of making lemonade scones. I’d never tried them before but they looked so much easier than the ones where you rub the butter into the flour. However, the problem was that we had no lemonade in the house. Only beer and cider. Typical.

I figured the carbonation of the lemonade makes these scones work and, although the cider is not as fizzy as lemonade, it still has the fizz. I was willing to experiment, as I tend to do.

Aussie Curves – Favourite Store

I’m in two minds about my favourite store.

The store I likely buy most of my clothes from is City Chic, mostly because I know they are going to fit and the clothes suit my style.

I remember when the first stores opened in New Zealand – I fell in love immediately with all the clothes and I haven’t stopped shopping there since. Finally there was a store which had stylish clothes that actually fit me, it was amazing. I still have the first dress I ever bought from the Lambton Quay store. I haven’t worn it in years, but I can’t bear to part with it.

Although I have started to shop around a bit more and buy online, I probably still buy at least one thing from City Chic every few weeks. I can’t help it.

Aussie Curves – Monochrome

I love me a bit of monochrome dressing. Usually is is more the black than the white, but I’m slowly expanding my wardrobe to include a few more lighter colours.

I tend to dress in a lot of black, or at least have a base of black with one bright piece to stand out.

So I had the ideal top to use for Monochrome week and it has been dubbed my referee’s top.

monochrome1

There’s not much to say about this top – it’s a good one to wear with a pair of jeans and blazer for work and I can easily get away with layering it.

monochrome2

Today I’ve partnered it with my new ponte pants I picked up at Farmers’ sale last weekend and I have to say, ponte pants are amazing. They’re like leggings, but a much thicker material, so you can actually wear them as pants. I’ve been a little dubious about wearing this top with leggings, but it works amazingly with the ponte pants. I might be investing in a few more pairs for the winter.

I also picked up this wet-look waterfall blazer at the Farmers’ sale last week and it is glorious. It’s kind of a cross between a blazer and a jacket. I could easily wear it over a light jumper for an extra layer.

The waterfall blazer looks to be a big trend this winter – I’ve found similar ones at a few other stores as well. If you’re after one, have a look at these ones from ASOS, Ezibuy, City Chic, or the Farmers one I am wearing here.

Thanks to Ezmae from Flashion Affair for taking pictures for me today!

Also, don’t you love my derelict shed? It actually proved to be quite the interesting photo backdrop. It does have some uses.

Dear Sarah Burnett, I do not choose to be fat

Last week Dr Sarah Burnett wrote a scathing piece deriding fat people. People like me.

It started like this, “Being morbidly obese is a choice. There, I’ve said it. I know it won’t make me popular, that many will accuse me of “fat-shaming”, while others will argue that being grossly overweight is a disability, and who chooses to be disabled?”

Quite frankly, I think this is horrendous, especially coming from someone who works in the health sector. On Friday when it appeared on Stuff.co.nz, her opinion piece made me so angry that I could hardly read it. Then I decided she shouldn’t be allowed to speak into the vacuum without someone setting her straight.

Here it is: I do not choose to be morbidly obese. I am just fat.

Aussie Curves – Handbag

I love a good handbag and I have searched far and wide for one that could end all handbags. But I’ve since realised that I can’t just stop at one. There are always going to be more that I want.

So instead, I’ve stopped looking at the cheap ones that I can easily buy on a whim. I’ve never had much luck with them anyway. I usually use them for a few weeks and then begin to hate them. Inevitably, I stop using them and they then sit around never to see the outside world again.

When we left Sydney, I donated a lot of clothes to the Salvation Army in Darlinghurst. My donation also included five handbags, which had already had their heyday with me. I’d moved on.

I’ve already talked about my beloved Coach bag – my first designer one which I had lusted after for months before finally buying it on sale. I still have it. I currently don’t use it as it desperately needs some leather conditioner put on it, which I just haven’t gotten around to. So it’s just sitting there, waiting.

I’m currently using a bag I picked up from Farmers, a Nica bag, which is the perfect size for something I use everyday. It fits my wallet, iPad, phone, and a few other bits and pieces. Occasionally a water bottle too.

I like that it has a long shoulder strap as well as the two handles. Bags that have both of these are usually a win for me.

It also has two front pockets which are great for my Snapper card, work ID, house keys and a few lip balms, so they don’t get lost in the big pocket.

But the thing that sold it for me, was this cute little pattern on the side. It turns a black bag into something a little different.

I also have my Kate Spade bag I picked up on my last trip to Australia. It’s big enough to fit my laptop in, which is exactly what I wanted from it.
