Aussie Curves – Cocktail

Greetings from the Gold Coast!

As I haven’t really had much time this week, what with all the traveling, reading, swimming and eating I have been doing, I realised I hadn’t done my Aussie Curves post this week for Cocktail. But I have done it just in time!

Now cocktail is something that I can really do – I have so many pretty dresses, as Man Piece would say.

However, as I am without camera or really most of the things needed to create an awesome post, this one is mostly going to be a flash back to what I have worn this year.

This year seems to have been one filled with cocktail events for me, particularly for my job and mostly in the last quarter of the year.

I have been lucky enough to be invited to several architecture awards nights and a wedding or two. From this I seem to have accumulated a few really nice dresses.

For this week’s blog post, I am going to show you three of them, as well as the best cocktail venue I have ever been to.

How To Write Your First Book has 21 authors giving their advice on some of the hardest things about writing. It is definitely well worth a read if you are wanting to write a book one day (like me).  There are a few things that I already relate to in the answers, but also a few tips and ideas I can take away from it in order to get writing.

Some of my favourite quotes include:

I always intended to be a writer from the moment I could read, really. When I married my second husband he gave me the opportunity to stay home and write. I was 28.

– Charlaine Harris

I think not writing for my day job helped to let that muscle relax during the day so that I felt like writing when I came home at night.

– Leigh Bardugo

Even this thing you’re doing, this story, is kind of interesting, but I think in a lot of ways it will be detrimental to people trying to write books. I’m serious. What happens is: They will read this story and they will see these people giving their experience as if that experience is normative. As if the experience they’re describing is how it works. And of course every experience like this is totally unique. Trying to fit your life into someone else’s model is how bad books get created. Everyone wants advice about how to do something but it really only works if you’re only going to plow forward regardless if you know nothing. But then again, that’s how it was for me. So maybe I’m doing the exact same thing I’m complaining about.

– Chuck Klosterman

What I take from this is that 1. Man Piece will hopefully give me the opportunity to stay home and write. (One day. I’m working on him.) 2. Not writing for my day job may help in writing fiction – maybe I need to give up being a journalist and do something else, which leaves me the creative freedom to write fiction. 3. Every piece of advice from established authors is bullshit and you should do what works for you when it comes to your writing.

I’ve had the 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest article open in my browser for awhile now. Who doesn’t love some amazing nature and animal photos? National Geographic, after all, does it best.

My favourite from all of these has to be the Orta Lake Storm Chasing by Riccardo Criseo as it shows just how far photographers will go for the shot.

Interesting Article

Textual analysis of The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Twilight revealed some interesting language use by the authors. Somehow The Hunger Games had ‘drunk’ as one of the most distinctive adjectives used. Personally, I think this is because of Haymitch. Twilight had the most common sentence of “I sighed.” Naturally. It is fairly interesting to know which words the authors favoured.

Fashion Love

This dress by Dior worn by Jennifer Lawrence to the Catching Fire premier in LA is amazing. For some reason, I just love it. If it wasn’t a mesh type material and see-through, I would totally wear something like it. Apparently even J-Law herself didn’t like it much. I came across it reading Cosmo’s list on scandalous red carpet outfits. This is definitely one of the tamer ones.

Grabby Hands

I really want to get my hands on some of the Capitol Colours collection from Cover Girl. It all looks so amazing. Just not sure who is stocking it. Cover Girl have created 12 looks for the 12 districts.

I have had this ‘sneak peek’ of Veronica Mars sitting open in my browser for awhile. I am so keen to see the movie! It is set for release 14 March. I just hope it will be coming to a cinema down-under and I need to see this on the big screen. (Yes, I backed it in the Kickstarter.)

Cherry cheese danishes

Last week I was very lucky to receive a massive bowl of cherries from The Hamper Box courtesy of one my work’s clients as a thank you and Merry Christmas.

It was massive. I’m starting to think several kilograms worth of cherries. And we got sent three of them.

So what do you do when you are inundated with fruit that really needs to be used?

Well, first you eat some. (Of course.)

Then you share some around. (Man Piece took off to work with a plastic bag full of cherries for his colleagues, which barely made a dent in the bowl and which he mostly ate.)

And then when you really want to use some of them up, you bake with them.

Thus the idea to make cherry cheese danishes came to mind.

I was originally going to make a cherry pie, but then… well… I couldn’t be bothered. It seemed like so much work!

But these cherry cheese danishes were so easy, and I really think they would be easy to do with a variety of different fruits.

What you will need (makes 16):

3 to 4 cups of cherries (or your fruit of choice. I would be keen to try this again with raspberries or strawberries.)
250g cream cheese
2 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
4 sheets puff pastry
1 egg and 1 Tbsp water for the egg wash to brush over

cherry1

Pictured here is raw sugar, but that is only because I didn’t realise we had no white sugar in the apartment. It worked well, but you could probably use whatever sugar you prefer.

Directions

First I needed to take the stalks off all the cherries and remove the pips. It would have been a whole heap easier if I had one of those fancy cherry de-pippers. Alas, I was left with a knife and my fingers to cut them open and pull the pips out. Messy work.

Mix the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla essence in a bowl until combined.

Cut each pastry sheet in four — waiting for it to thaw fully makes this a whole lot easier.

Spread cream cheese mixture over pastry square and add cherries. Put a few more on than pictured – I think I ended up putting about eight halves on each pastry square.

You could really do this in any orientation you like, be it diagonally or just in a dollop in the centre. It’s really up to how you want to fold up the pastry.

I did a mixture of both, but I made sure that there were vents from the centre to let any steam out. I found the best way to fold over a long corner, fold the other long corner on top of that and then tuck the small corners in, squeezing the pastry together.

Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Brush with egg wash. (I didn’t actually do this as I don’t have one of those cooking brushes right now. The pastries were fine without it, but it would give them a bit of a nicer look.)

Bake in oven set to 200°C for around 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Serve fresh. They do last a few days in the fridge – if they make it that long. Be warned, they are very more-ish!

Aussie Curves – Headwear

I own a lot of headbands. I love headbands. I blame Gossip Girl. No shame.

I tend to go through phases of wearing them. Currently I’m in an off-phase of wearing them. But there is no way I am going to get rid of them, I will definitely wear them again.

So this week for Aussie Curves – Headwear I have put together a bit of a montage of all the headbands I own. Technically I have more, but the rest of them are packed away in New Zealand. Sad face. I will be reunited one day.

headwear_1

Pretty much all of my headbands I got for free. The magazine I used to work for in Auckland gets lots of beauty products for review. All of these headbands are from Mita via McPherson’s Products. They can be found at any pharmacy in NZ.

The one I’m wearing on the bottom right I featured in the Races post. These headbands create great fascinators for that type of thing.

Added bonus of this post is that you get to see my new hair colour! I just went with black, but it doesn’t look very black does it? Got a bit of a red tinge to it. It definitely is darker though.

Short and sharp this week. Make sure you check out the other posts from the Aussie Curves ladies below.
